The Repatriation Division works closely with museums and federal agencies under the authority of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). NAGPRA mandates federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funding to return Native American cultural items and human remains to their proper indigenous origins and descendants. The Repatriation Division also works with local, state, and federal organizations to raise awareness of tribal issues, and work on behalf of tribal stances on a variety of topics with an emphasis on preservation, protection, and education.
