Tribal Police Department
The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Police Department is housed in the Tribal Judicial Facility. Its mission is “to serve, protect the rights of all people, and promote and preserve the peace within Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo (YDSP).” Law enforcement personnel employ a system of police protection for all residents, the tribal community, and other persons who enter the boundaries of the Pueblo (reservation lands) and secure all rights and powers which are inherent of the tribe's sovereign status. The Tribal Police also safeguard all resources and property of YDSP.
The law enforcement division is maintained at the tribal government level and is overseen by the Chief of Police and the Sergeant who is second in command. Currently, police staff includes three patrol officers and administrative support. This department is funded by OLES-Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) 638 Contract, Law Enforcement Services. The Tribal Police Officers respond to various assortments of job responsibilities such as traffic complaints, domestic disturbances, bailiff duties, game and wildlife conservation, etc. The department provides 24 hour police coverage for approximately 15 mile radius including aid in the enforcement of codes and ordinances as well as patrolling tribal lands, conducting surveillance, and investigating crimes or civil infractions.
K9 Unit – The department has operated the K-9 Unit for over six years. The K-9 Unit is employed for both narcotic detection and patrol. The K-9 dog, Ricky assists tribal police officers in the war against drugs and helps police maintain a drug free pueblo environment.
COPS Grant - In addition to BIA funding Tribal Police are also supported by a COPS Tribal Resource Grant. This grant enabled the purchase of vital police equipment to aid officers in efficient law enforcement including: vehicles, video patrol cameras, and mobile laptops.
Code Enforcement - It is the duty of the Tribal Police Department to enforce the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Peace Code, Youth Code, Traffic Code and the Domestic Violence Code.
Partnerships - The Tribal Police Department works in partnership with other law enforcement agencies such as: local police departments, U.S. Customs, Border Patrol and additional federal agencies.
