Garden Based Nutrition Project

A partnership between Health Education Services and the Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center (AASTEC) began the new year by embarking on a five-year long project through an award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The goal of the project is to develop, implement and evaluate a culturally relevant holistic nutrition program to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke while focusing on affiliated risk factors such as unhealthy diets.  The project will aim to increase access to and use of traditional and other healthy foods and beverages.  The project has included partnerships with the Environmental Department in building a Hoop House to be used for community gardening in this project. The Garden Based Nutrition Project will include a combination of educational sessions to help participants learn about planting, growing and harvesting fresh fruits/vegetables that includes learning about Native Traditional foods. The project will also include classes to help learn about the connection between food and nutrition.
