Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (YDSP), was conveyed 63 acres of land in 1989 by recognition of Public Law 90-287. The land is situated within the City and County of El Paso, Texas. Since then, the Pueblo has acquired various properties that are located in the Southeast/Lower Valley of the City of El Paso and the City of Socorro. The Pueblo has a total of 73,572.78 acres of land. Tribal lands held in Trust by the United States Department of the Interior total 3,212.90 acres. Some of the Trust land supports tribal government and tribal housing communities. The land configuration for YDSP is referred to as “checkerboard” or pieced together with non-contiguous boundaries. The primary reservation community is one mile northeast of the Zaragoza International border [and lies] between the United States and Mexico.
Some tribal lands are not held in Trust but rather have been acquired with fee simple title. The fee simple properties owned by YDSP total 70,359.88 acres. The acquisition of property for the Tiguas is tri-fold in purpose: ceremonial, residential development and future tribal economic development. One such acquisition was the Chilicote Ranch located in both Presidio and Jeff Davis County located in the State of Texas.
The Chilicote Ranch is home to the Tribe’s ranching operations. The ranch totals 70,359.88 acres. Acreage includes the 68,203.09 original Chilicote purchase and the later purchased Bennett Ranch comprised of 2,156.79 acres. The Bennett Ranch is adjacent to the Chilicote Ranch and therefore annexed into Chilcote ranching operations.
